Here we are on the day before the 4th of July. My deployed Marine son is somewhere in the Indian Ocean and I’m thinking about all the things tomorrow means to me. I hope you will pause for a few moments between the barbeques and fireworks to reflect on what it means to YOU to be an American.
I’ve traveled the world with my wife and there is no other place where our lives would have been possible. For two average kids – one from New York, the other from Kansas to get to live a life our parents could never have envisioned is one of the miracles of the USA. In America, you can choose where you live, what you do for a living and ultimately, even how much money you make. You are not limited by a caste system.
A couple of years ago, my wife saw a documentary called Girl Rising. To see what girls in other parts of the world are subjected to just for seeking a basic education should make every American woman grateful. Her comment: “We squander and ignore more opportunities than most women in the rest of the world will ever have.”
That’s probably true of all of us – not just women. All you have to do is look at the number of immigrants that flood into the USA every year to know that there is no better place to live, work and raise a family.
Is this a perfect country? Is there such a thing? Are we a perfect people? Again, are there such things?
Not only does the US Government give the most humanitarian aid in the world, but individual Americans give to charities both in their neighborhoods and around the world – 95% of Americans give to charity. It’s not limited to the wealthy. Everyday Americans give too.
So this weekend, we will be flying our flags proudly. When Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” or our “Star Spangled Banner” gets played, we’ll stand with our hands on our hearts and a tear in our eye. Proud to be American.
